Frequently Asked Questions

General

It is always free to use all of the features of KidJournalz.

Kidjournalz lets you create journals for your children. Your journals are made up of public and private journal entries, milestones you want to record, and growth statistics. Your public journal entries are shared with your friends on your site and can be posted to your Facebook wall if you connect your Facebook account. You can also search for new buddies on the site, invite friends from Facebook or via email, and connect with other parents by asking or answering questions in the Tips section or joining discussions in the Forum.

KidJournalz lets you keep journals about your kids in a separate place than all of your other social networking content. You can choose to share public journal entries on your Facebook wall, but when you want to simply view your journals, you can easily browse them on KidJournalz without sifting through all of your other Facebook content.

Facebook Connect

When you register, click the Connect with Facebook button before you enter any other info. You'll be prompted to login to Facebook, which will start the process of creating a KidJournalz membership and linking with your Facebook account. After entering your zip and acknowledging our terms of service, you'll be able to decide if you want to import your Facebook name and photo.

You shouldn't. If you navigate to KidJournalz.com while you're logged into Facebook, the site should detect your connection and automatically log you in. If for some reason you see the login form, click the Connect with Facebook button and you should be logged in.

You can, but you'll need to set your password first. Click My Account from your homepage and then click Edit. You'll be able to set your password using your edit Account form. After saving the password, you can use it and your email to login without being connected to Facebook. If you do so, you won't get the option to post journal entries to your wall until you login again by clicking the Connect with Facebook button.

Adding Kids

On your home page, click the button labelled 'Add Child.' On the next screen you'll need to add at least your child's name, birthdate and gender. If you want to track growth statistics, enter your child's height and weight at birth here. Use the form in the panel to the upper right to upload a picture of your child that will appear on your child's home page and in lists. You can replace this at any time, and can also upload many other pictures as you create journal entries.

These checkboxes give you finer control over the visibility of your kids to users on the site. List in Directory means that your child will appear in searches and that a user will be able to click over to your child's home page. However, they will not be able to see any journal entries, milestones, or statistics until you make them a Buddy.

The Private Group checkbox means that your child will be completely invisible to others until you make someone a Buddy. Normally your kids are visible in your profile, allowing others to click over to their home page. Again, other users will not be able to see any journal entries, milestones, or statistics until you make them a Buddy. A Private Group child cannot also appear in searches, so that option will be disabled if Private is checked.

Journal Entries

The quickest way is usually by starting at your Home screen, and then clicking on the 'Add Journal Entry' link for a child under 'My Kids'. You can also navigate to your child's home page, click the button labelled 'Add Journal Entry'. Enter a title for the entry and the date (defaulted to current date). Check Private or 'Friends and Family' to indicate whether you want this entry visible to others. If you're connected through Facebook, check the 'Share on Facebook' box to allow this post to appear on your wall. Use the forms in the Journal Images and Video Upload panels to add other content. You can add up to 5 photos and 1 video per journal entry.

A private Journal Entry is only visible to you in your Private Journal. A Friends/Family entry is visible in your Public journal which can be viewed by your KidJournalz buddies. Non-buddy users can never view any of your journals. Friends/Family journal entries can also be published to your Facebook wall.

Statistics

First, when you are creating your child, enter their birth height and weight. You can also go back and edit your child's record at any time from their home page. At other points in time when you have new statistics, click the 'Add Weight/Height' button on your child's home page. Enter the date, height, and weight measurements and they will be added to the growth chart and graph.
